Bitcoin Ordinals emerged in early 2023 and caught much of the community by surprise. The protocol assigns serial numbers to individual satoshis (the smallest Bitcoin unit, worth 0.00000001 BTC) and allows data - images, text, even video clips - to be permanently inscribed directly onto the Bitcoin blockchain. The result is a native Bitcoin NFT that lives entirely on-chain, not on a separate server. This sparked a genuine philosophical debate: Bitcoin purists argue that filling block space with JPEGs is a misuse of the network; others see it as expanding Bitcoin's utility and developer ecosystem. Regardless of where one stands, Ordinals introduced a wave of new developers and users to Bitcoin's base layer for the first time in years.
