Ethereum's developers have laid out a multi-year upgrade path focused on scaling the network further. The major milestones include improving data availability for Layer 2 chains (Proto-Danksharding has already shipped), eventually full Danksharding which would dramatically increase the data Ethereum can process, and continued improvements to validator efficiency. The overarching vision is for Ethereum to serve as a highly secure, decentralized settlement layer that processes its own transactions plus aggregates the output of hundreds of Layer 2 chains - essentially becoming the financial backbone of a decentralized internet. Progress is methodical and research-driven rather than rapid and speculative.
